A corruption in the printed edition of al-Nasāʾī’s al-Ḍuʿafāʾ!! And the possibility that it is likewise in some manuscript copies of the book! And a corruption in the printed edition of Ibn ʿAdī!

In al-Ḍuʿafāʾ wa-l-Matrūkīn by Imām al-Nasāʾī (p. 44) it appears:

“Ziyād ibn Abī Ziyād al-Jassāṣ, Palestinian, not trustworthy.”

Ibn al-Jawzī transmitted it likewise from him in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ wa-l-Matrūkīn (1/299), saying:

“Ziyād ibn Abī Ziyād Abū Muḥammad al-Jassāṣ, Baṣran, and it is said: Wāsiṭī. And al-Nasāʾī said: Palestinian. He narrated from Anas and al-Ḥasan …”

I say: I do not know whether there existed a copy of al-Nasāʾī’s book in this form, upon which Ibn al-Jawzī relied.

The correct description is “Wāsiṭī,” not “Palestinian.”

This is how al-Khaṭīb and Ibn ʿAdī transmitted it from al-Nasāʾī.

Al-Khaṭīb said in Tārīkh Baghdād (8/474):

“Al-Barqānī informed us: Aḥmad ibn Saʿīd ibn Saʿd informed us: ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī narrated to us: my father narrated to us, saying: ‘Ziyād ibn Abī Ziyād al-Jassāṣ: Wāsiṭī, not trustworthy.’”

And Ibn ʿAdī said in al-Kāmil (3/187):

“Al-Nasāʾī said: Ziyād al-Jassāṣ is Wāsiṭī, abandoned in ḥadīth.”

Then he said:

“Ziyād—Muḥammad ibn Khālid al-Wahbī narrates from him a compilation, and Yazīd ibn Hārūn has from him a compilation, and the people of Baṣra and others from the Shāmīs narrate from him …”

I say: This is how it appears in the printed edition of Ibn ʿAdī, and it is corrupted. The correct wording is:

“and others from the Wāsiṭīs.”
